Description:

The Cinema Studies Institute at the University of Toronto invites applications for a tenure-stream position in the field of Cinema and Digital Media. The position will be at the rank of Assistant Professor and will start on July 1, 2016.

We are seeking applicants with extensive knowledge of the history, theory, and criticism of new cinematic media. The successful applicant’s area of research specialization may include digital cinema, social media, online culture, gaming, and/or another area related to new media. The applicant’s teaching and/or research record should also demonstrate experience examining the relationship between cinema and digital media. Demonstrated expertise in global or non-Western practices and industries is welcome. 

Duties associated with this position include teaching courses in cinema and digital media at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, supervising and mentoring students, participating in the affairs of the Institute, and conducting innovative research at the highest international level. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Film Studies, Film and Media Studies, or a related discipline by the date of appointment or shortly thereafter and must present evidence of excellence in both teaching and research. Evidence of excellence in teaching should be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, letters of reference, and the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application. A record of excellence in research should be demonstrated by publications in top ranked and field relevant academic journals, presentations at significant conferences, and strong endorsements by referees.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN FILM PRODUCTION

The School for the Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University invites applications for a tenure track position in film production at the Assistant Professor level to begin August 1, 2016. We are seeking a filmmaker or filmmaker/scholar with a significant track record in fiction, non-fiction, and/or experimental film/video production who is able to supervise and advise students on projects at all levels of our program and in a variety of forms and styles from fiction to documentary to experimental. We seek candidates with grounding in the creative aspects of film and video production, knowledge of new digital production workflows, a strong knowledge of film history, and the ability to also teach courses in cinema and media studies on a regular basis. As our film program is situated within an interdisciplinary art school, an interest in working together with fellow faculty in the other arts and fostering interdisciplinarity amongst students is also desirable. We especially value innovative and experimental approaches to creative work and inventive approaches to pedagogy.

The BFA in Film is a four-year, cohort-based production program that includes a very strong component of instruction in film studies. Students are exposed to the breadth of film styles and modes. They work intensively together over four years, each producing a number of their own productions. Our goal is to provide a well-rounded film production and studies education that also permits students to specialize in areas of their particular interest. Our students go on to be directors, producers, DPs, editors, screenwriters, and artists working in a variety of media and forms.

The School for the Contemporary Arts is located in a dynamic neighbourhood in the heart of downtown Vancouver and provides a diverse and engaging intellectual and artistic atmosphere in which to work. The School is an interdisciplinary fine and performing arts and scholarly program that offers a BA in Art, Performance, and Cinema Studies, and BFAs in Dance, Film, Music, Theatre, and Visual Art, as well as an interdisciplinary MFA and an MA in Comparative Media Arts. Faculty at the School are required to maintain a professional art practice and/or scholarly activity. A normal academic year for tenure track faculty in the School for the Contemporary Arts consists of two teaching semesters and a research semester; faculty generally teach four courses (or the equivalent) per year. Advising, committee responsibilities, supervision of graduate students, and occasional graduate level teaching are expected.

Requirements for the position include: an MA, MFA, or Ph.D. in film production or a relevant field; a well-established track record of film exhibition and production; a vibrant and continuing artistic practice. Experience teaching at the college or university level is an asset.

“Xavier Dolan, Queer Nations, and World Cinema:

Locating the Intimate within the Global”

DEADLINE EXTENDED TO APRIL 29, 2015

With the Jury Prize acceptance speech given at Cannes 2014 and the major buzz generated by his latest feature Mommy, 25-year-old Québécois director Xavier Dolan brought his cinema to the attention of audiences and critics from all around the world. Four times in competition at Cannes since 2009 (with J’ai tué ma mère) and once in official competition at Venice with Tom à la ferme (2013), Dolan has been a crucial player in the film festival circuit for the past five years, and a spokesperson for the inventiveness of Quebec cinema in the international context.

Dolan’s “very Québécois” profile combined with the wide circulation of his films in foreign markets continues to enhance the relevance of Quebec’s cultural specificity in wider frameworks of film reception. Meanwhile, his prolific output provides a growing corpus from which rich thematic, socio-political and aesthetic approaches can be considered. With this in mind, Synoptique is devoting a special issue to Dolan’s work and its relevance both for Québec and world cinema. We therefore invite you to submit texts that transcend the classic “auteurist” approach, instead using Dolan’s cinema as a lens through which to explore a broader range of issues that situate it at the crossroads of contemporary cultural, political and cinematic concerns in the interdisciplinary field of film studies.

Submissions can include, but are not limited to, topics such as:

- National and trans-national cinemas as they relate to youth and queer filmmaking

- Film festivals, networks and circulation

- Language and accents in (trans)national cinemas

- Autobiographical fiction, theories of adaptation, the appropriation of source texts

- Local/global reception

- Queer spectatorships

- Screen acting, performance, directing actors

- The cinema of small nations

- Representations of the family, tradition, contemporary Québec, urban and rural

contexts, diversity

- Queer and border transgressions

- Bodies, desires, fantasies and identity politics

Submissions should be approximately 15-30 pages (3,500-7,500 words), written in either English or French, and formatted according to MLA guidelines. Papers should be submitted by April 15th, 2015.
