The "Canadian Popular": Atom Egoyan, Michael Ondaatje, and Canadian Popular Culture

    by Batia Boe Stolar

Abstract: A comparison of the cinematic and literary careers of Atom Egoyan and Michael Ondaatje, respectively, reveals the intricate working of a Canadian popular culture-but what is this culture? How can it be characterized? How does it operate, particularly in relation to the global popular culture? The author offers answers to these questions through, first, a theorization on Canadian popular culture and, second, a comparative close reading of Egoyan's Calendar and Ondaatje's Running in the Family.
