American and European Voices in the Films of European Filmmakers Wim Wenders, Percy Adlon and Aki Kaurismäki

    by Janina Falkowska

Abstract: The main focus of this paper is the analysis of the double-voiced discourse in Paris, Texas (1984), Bagdad Café (1987) and Leningrad Cowboys Go America (1989) by Wim Wenders, Percy Adlon and Aki Kaurismäki, respectively. The European and American voices in these films create a double-voiced discourse not only through the films' diegetic content, but also through the manner of presentation. This article considers the ways in which American and European voices are manifested through techniques of presentation and the construction of the cinematic language which together create an effect of hybridization and multivoicedness.
