Dead Queers: One Legacy of the Trope of "Mind Over Matter" in the Films of David Cronenberg

    by Christine Ramsay

Abstract: Through ideas raised by Thomas Waugh's queering of the Canadian canon, this paper elaborates a critique of popular and critical postmodern thinking about the cinema of David Cronenberg as radical and his heroes as transgressive. It is a response to Waugh's suggestion that masculinity studies in Canadian cinema would benefit from a shift in theoretical perspective away from the baised heteronormative one based in early feminist thinking on sexual difference, toward the more socio-discursively inclusive one based on contemporary queer thinking on the homosocial continuum, homosocial desire, and homophobia. Accordingly, it sketches out the beginnings of a dialogic/feminist/queer reading of authorship and subjectivity in Cronenberg, taking into critical account the number of dead queers that litter the sets of our putatively progressive premier auteur. Rather than a cinema of masculine liberation and transformation, Cronenberg's work is revealed as decidely romantic, phallic, and narcissistic in its hysterical treatment of the body and the (feminized, queer) other.
