Fragmentation and Ideology in Kira Muratova's The Asthenic Syndrome and Arto Paragamian's Because Why

    by Serafima Roll

Abstract: The article addresses an issue of the intricate alliance between the practice of fragmentation found in many modernist discourses and ideology in Kira Muratova's The Asthenic Syndrome and Arto Paragamian's Because Why. It demonstrates how, while using the formal methods of their predecessors, these contemporary film directors analyze the dominant ideological problems facing their societies--the all pervasive brutality in the post-Glasnost period of Russia and the more subtle violence towards individual freedom that leads to personal and social alienation in contemporary Canadian society. Focussing on the re-surfacing of violent instincts and general inertia that permeate contemporary Russian society and on the other hand the disintegration of personal identity and nuclear family in Canadian society, the paper shows the film directors' interest in concrete historical situatedness as well as raising some questions related to the reasons for the social problems that two different societies are undergoing at this particular historical moment.
